Meet the staff and teachers at EBI. These individuals bring their wealth of experience teaching and working with children to the school and classrooms.
Jon Fulk

Head of School
Jon Fulk, originally from Ohio, recently returned to the US after spending 11 years living in Mexico City, Mexico. Since 2000 he worked at The American School Foundation (ASF), first as a teacher, then as Assistant Head and finally as Head of the Lower School, overseeing approximately 940 students, 700 families and 98 full-time faculty and staff.
Jon holds a B.A. in history from The University of Toledo, an M.A. in Educational Administration from Michigan State University, an M.A. in Elementary Education from The University of Alabama and has completed his doctoral coursework in Education Policy and Administration at the University of Minnesota.
Jon has extensive experience with IB’s Primary Years Programme (PYP) and was instrumental in leading ASF through the accreditation and restructuring process.
Sagrario Argüelles

IB Coordinator
Sagrario Argüelles teaches second and third grades. Sagrario was born and raised in Mexico City. She has been an Elementary School teacher for the past twenty-eight years and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Sagrario has worked in different schools in Mexico City, the last being the American School Foundation where she worked as a teacher, grade level coordinator and dean.
As a teacher Sagrario’s goal is to prepare students for the future. The Primary Years Program of IB reflects all her beliefs as a teacher. Sagrario is very fortunate to have had the opportunity of work with this program for the past eight years.
As an educator Sagrario believes that the journey is as important as the destination. She aims to be a guide to her students and mentor them through their journey of knowledge and achievement, helping them to grow to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open–minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective.
Lei Jin

Mandarin Teacher
Jin received a MBA degree from Tsinghua University in China and studied education in the U.S. He has been a Mandarin teacher in different schools. He has implemented creative curriculum for different aged students. In this Mandarin program, he will not only teach Chinese words and grammar but introduce Chinese history, culture and art, to make the learning process fully exciting.
Alexandra Alquati

Second Grade Spanish Teacher
Alexandra Alquati is a second grade teacher. She was born in Caracas, Venezuela, but was raised in Barranquilla, Colombia. Alexandra has been teaching for over 7 years as an elementary school teacher in Colombia and in the USA. She discovered her love of teaching when she was 16 years old when she began teaching piano to children. At 18, she became a music teacher, and loved it so much she decided to get her B.A. in Early Childhood Pedagogy. While going to school she worked as a second grade bilingual teacher and a kindergarten bilingual teacher in schools in Barranquilla. After moving to Texas, she taught bilingual Pre-K in the public schools for two years. Although she has not taught music in a long time, she still uses her musical skills in the classroom with guitar and song. She has been living in the Bay Area for three years, where she married her wonderful husband and worked at Aurora School in Oakland. Growing up in a bilingual environment, she is a strong advocate for bilingual education and is determined to carry out EBI’s mission on forming inquisitive learners. She is currently working on an M.A. degree in Equity and Social Justice in Education, and is a certified bilingual teacher in Texas and California.
Rita Saballos

Second Grade spanish Teacher
Rita was born in El Salvador and moved to the Bay Area in 2008. She has been a teacher and Family Advisor for preschool and first grade for 10 years. She obtained her teaching degree from the Evangelical University of El Salvador and holds an MA in Counseling and Family Education from Villanueva University Center, affiliated with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. Before coming to EBI, she taught 6 year-old children at Centro Escolar La Floresta. As a teacher, one of her goals is to educate children with joy and freedom. Rita has worked with the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate for 3 years, and hopes to encourage students to develop the attributes of the PYP profile. Rita is married and has a baby, but she also feels fortunate to belong to the EBI family.
Adwoa Mante'ete'

Third Grade
English Teacher
Adwoa was born in Berkeley and has lived almost every place in the Bay Area except San Francisco. She has been working with children since she was a child. Adwoa began work as a Multicultural Education Specialist. Since then she has worked as an aide, Director of an After-School program, a P.E. Teacher, a trainer of English Language Teachers, a first, second, and third grade teacher, and a science, math and English teacher. Adwoa has taught science to students kindergarten through high school, math to students from pre-school to college, and all other subjects, including English, from pre-school through elementary school.
Adwoa graduated from Mills College with a degree in Biology. She did graduate work in physiological psychology. She obtained her teaching credential from Chapman University. Ouside of education Adwoa’s passions are baseball and blues, being a mom to Shannon Kofi, and making the world a better place, not necessarily in that order. She loves working and playing with children. Adwoa is thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to teach at a wonderful school.
María Luisa Offerman

Third Grade Spanish Teacher
María Luisa Offermann, from Santiago Chile, teaches second grade at EBI. María Luisa is passionate about her teaching and has taught for the last 28 years. She has dedicated a great part of her career to teaching swimming to pre-school and school-aged children. She has studied Interior Architecture and has a degree in education from the University of Chile in Santiago. In addition to her work with children, María Luisa has worked as a personal trainer. She is also a massage therapist and a reflexologist. From 2005 to 2008 María Luisa served as a primary school teacher at the Farmland School in Chile in the areas of natural sciences, social studies, and technology and applied sciences. She has developed a strong understanding of the teaching and learning process that gives her an enormous amount of satisfaction in her current role at EBI.
Victoria Ladew

Second, Fourth and Fifth Grade English Teacher
Victoria Ladew was born in the Bay Area, but she was raised in sunny El Paso, Texas. She graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso, and moved back to the Bay Area to work in child welfare for the Alameda County Public Defender’s Office. She also worked with Family Builders, a Bay Area nonprofit organization where she worked to help match children in care with adoptive families.
Victoria received her teaching education at Mills College in Oakland, where she worked to earn her California Teaching Credential; and is currently pursuing her Masters of Education degree with an emphasis in teaching. Victoria is thrilled to be part of the EBI community, where she can teach children in a constructivist and inquiry-based way, using each child’s own curiosity as the driving force. Her guiding philosophy is simple: treat children with respect – as people who can help us all learn about the world.
Victoria loves to travel with her husband, and has traveled through Europe, the UK, China, and into Mexico. She believes that there is true value in being a global citizen – one who can adapt and appreciate differences.
José Antonio Galloso

Fourth and Fith Grade Spanish Teacher
Jose Antonio Galloso has more than thirteen years of experience as a teacher and has worked at the school and university level. He considers that one can only be an educator if you understand that you are responding to a profound professional call. He is Peruvian and has studies in Audiovisual Communication, Spanish and Creative Writing.
Besides being a teacher he is a writer and photographer. He has published three novels and a collection of short stories for young adults with Alfaguara, publishing house. These books are required readings in many Peruvian schools as part of their reading plan. Also has published a poetry book and a visual poetry book in collaboration with the Chilean artist Franz Fischer, Peskador. Jose Antonio’s literary work has been included in several anthologies and has obtained some prices for them. As a photographer he has published in different printed means and on the web; besides having participated in many collective exhibitions.
Jose Antonio feels very lucky to be part of the EBI community since he has found not only a great group of people that has received him with open arms, but also has a great affinity between his vision of education and the philosophy of the school and the International Baccalaureate Organization.
Jessica Inwood

Kindergarten and First Grade English Teacher
Jessica Inwood was raised in Berkeley and has lived in Philadelphia, San Francisco and currently here in Oakland. She earned her B.A. degree in Art History from Santa Clara University in 2007 and is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education from Mills College. Jessica studied abroad in Paris from 2003 to 2004 at the Université de la Sorbonne and loved wandering through the wonderful Museums there. She has always loved working with children and is especially interested in child development. She worked in a fifth grade classroom at Joaquin Miller Elementary and second and third grade at the Mills College Children’s School, while obtaining her Teaching Credential. Her teaching practice has been enriched by positions as Gallery Teacher at the San Jose Museum of Art and after-school, first grade and kindergarten teacher in the GLO program of San Francisco.
Jessica is excited to learn with all of her students and encourages their inquiry into the world around them. In her spare time she loves playing football (not the American kind), dancing, singing and making crafts. She continues to explore Museums and the outdoors in Morocco, Spain, Prague and Australia, always happy to travel and experience wonderful cultural connections.
Gabriela Martínez del Campo

First Grade Spanish Teacher
Gabriela was born in Mexico City, Mexico where she studied music education, a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in Institutional Communication. Gabriela has been a music and Spanish teacher for more than 20 years, from pre-primary to upper school. She has collaborated to design educational programs and has published works related to music, values and Spanish language. Additionally, she has coordinated conferences for parents and teachers to put the programs into action.
Kathy León

First Grade Spanish Teacher
Kathy moved to San Francisco from Mexico City with her husband and dog Chicles. She was born in Columbus, Georgia and feels fortunate because she spent her childhood living in Germany and Belgium due to her father being in the military. At age eleven her family moved back to the U.S. and she quickly realized the importance of being multilingual.
She has been a classroom teacher for three years and while working at The American School Foundation in Mexico City, she worked with the Primary Years Programme. Kathy has a B.S. in Communications and a minor in Business from St. John’s University. After working for MTV Networks for six years she could no longer deny her passion for working with children. She worked as a teacher’s assistant at an elementary school while completing her M.S. in Elementary Education from Bridgeport University. During her free time she loves to travel with her husband and spend time outdoors with Chicles.
Mara Brown

Kindergarten Spanish Teacher
Mara Brown joined EBI in 2007. The product of a bilingual household, she was born in the United States and raised in Spain. Mara brings her love of languages, strong belief in bilingualism and expertise in art and flamenco dance to her fabulous classroom. She holds a B.A. in Spanish and Art and has been a Spanish and art teacher for many years, teaching preschoolers through adults. Mara is married and the mother of three children.
Rosy Mendoza

Kindergarten Spanish Teacher
Rosy Mendoza-Brown is from Guadalajara, Mexico. She got her BA in Education in Mexico and earned her Associate
Teacher Certificate in Early Childhood Education from Peralta College. Before joining EBI she worked as a Spanish teacher in Albany schools. She feels fortunate to have the opportunity to teach kindergarten at EBI. This is her second year. As a teacher, Rosy’s goal is to prepare her students for a better world and to encourage children to be inquirers. Rosy is married and has one daughter. She enjoys taking her dog for long walks and playing soccer.
Geselle Bauer

Kindergarten Associate Teacher
Geselle Bauer was born in Peru and moved to the U.S. about 7 years ago. In Peru, Geselle completed studies for a credential as an associate teacher in early childhood education. Currently, she continues studying to remain current in the area of education and to enrich her work with children. Geselle currently works as an associate teacher to support teachers and children in kindergarten. She is happy working at EBI particularly because she has the opportunity to grow professionally and share her culture. Geselle is passionate about education and enjoys being with children and learning from them every day.
Jackeline Rago

Music Teacher
Jackie is an accomplished musician (she is expert in guitar, mandolin, singing, Latin American percussion instruments and the keyboard) with 15 years of experience as a composer, arranger, producer and educator. Jackeline was born in Caracas and grew up learning the music of her native Venezuela. At four years old she began a formal and rigorous period of the musical education that included traditional Venezuelan and classic music. Jackeline studied with the virtuosos of the native folklore and professional musicians who were member of the Philharmonic orchestra of Caracas. She moved to San Francisco and obtained a degree in Arts concentrating in classic mandolin in the Institute of Music and Arts of San Francisco in 1989. Jackie has worked with children for fifteen years in the Bay Area, utilizing her experience in musical education and as a musician. She has received numerous awards and recognition for her work and her long list of recordings. She also has worked in local and national musical recordings.
María José Rodrigo Brenni

Pre-Kinder Lead Teacher (Azul)
María José was born in Chile. She moved to California when she was 13 and has lived in the Bay Area since then. She is currently taking early childhood classes to add to the ones that she already has. She has worked with children for 9 years, working from preschool to school age. She worked at the Antwerp International School in the preschool classes for 6 months. She loves working with kids because she believes early education is a very important in a child’s life and teaching in her mother tongue is very rewarding. She is very happy to be part of the growing EBI community.
Lupita González

Pre-Kinder Associate Teacher (Azul)
Lupita was born and grew up in the town of Arandas in Jalisco, Mexico. She has lived in Castro Valley since 2006 with her husband. Lupita loves to play and share with her students. She firmly believes that children construct knowledge through play. Lupita earned her Associate Teacher certificate in Early Childhood Education from Chabot College where she continues to study to enrich her understanding of her work. For Lupita, being a teacher implies guiding and accompanying her students in all stages of their learning as they develop skills and attitudes that will help them become committed and principled people. Lupita is also convinced of the richness that working in a multicultural environment offers and greatly enjoys the opportunity to work at EBI.
Merly Chou

Pre-Kinder Lead Teacher (Verde)
Merly was born in Lima, Peru and has a degree in Law and Political Science. Two years ago Merly arrived to the Bay Area with the goal of working in the bilingual educational system. Working with children has given her a different perspective on life and changed her values and feelings in a way that causes her to feel more creative and productive within the community. Currently, Merly continues taking classes in Early Childhood Education at Chabot College with the goal of earning her teaching credential.
Deysi Mora

Pre-Kinder Associate Teacher (Verde)
Deysi is originally from Los Angeles, California but lived many years in Guadalajara, Mexico where she studied her undergraduate program in tourism. Seven years ago, Deysi returned to the U.S. and settled in the East Bay. Deysi’s family is latina, and she is very proud of her roots.
Deysi’s desire to continue growing and the motivation she feels from her great love for children led Deysi to registered for courses at Chabot College where she obtained her diploma as an early childhood associate teacher. It is very important for Deysi to respect the learning styles of each one of her children and she works daily to identify and plan learning strategies that allow her students to construct meaningful knowledge.
Rosa Abedini

Pre-Kinder Associate Teacher (Rojo)
Rosa Abedini was born in Lima, Peru and resides in El Cerrito with her husband Masoud. She has been working as a Spanish Teacher for the past seven years in the East Bay. She has experience teaching Spanish to children from preschool through middle school. Her passion is to inspire children to love the Spanish culture and its richness. She enjoys spending time with family and good friends. She also enjoys Peruvian music and is a big fan of Diego de Cibela’s artwork.
Tanya Peña

Pre-Kinder Lead Teacher (Rojo)
Tanya Peña was raised in South Texas and Mexico. She is currently completing her BA in Human Development with an option in Early Childhood Education at California State University, East Bay. Tanya’s strong belief in the importance of bilingualism and in giving students a global context for social awareness and responsibility brought her to join the EBI community from its inception. Tanya has eight years of experience working with elementary and preschool children and is passionate about food, music, dance and art.
Norma Santiago

Pre-Kinder Lead Teacher (Amarillo)
Norma is from Puerto Rico. She came to Oakland, CA in 2000 and has been a member of the EBI faculty since August, 2007. Norma received her degree in education from the University of Puerto Rico. She has worked as a special education teacher, in regular school programs and as a tutor. She loves to share her energy, her talents and knowledge with children and the EBI community. Norma has two children and a granddaughter. Besides her passion for working with children, she also enjoys sewing, designing and cooking.
Verónica Grande

Pre-Kinder Associate Teacher (Amarillo)
Verónica Grande was born in El Salvador and graduated from national university of El Salvador with a degree in physical and occupational therapy. She came to the Bay Area in June, 2007 and lives with her husband and brother.
Verónica feels lucky to be able to teach to children in her native language. She loves cooking, singing, reading and creating stories from her imagination. She aspires to bring new ideas of learning to the EBI children and to help them become wonderful humans being for the future.
Carmen Hernández

Pre-Kinder Floating Assistant Teacher
Carmen Hernández was born in Mexico where she lived until she emigrated to the United States several years ago. Carmen continued her studies of childhood development in the U.S. Carmen has worked in Berkeley public schools for more than 14 years and is passionate about education and supporting faculty and staff. Additionally, Carmen has supported the EBI team since the school was founded, first as a volunteer and later as an assistent. Carmen is married and has three children, the youngest of which is an EBI student.
Yésica Perea

Kindergarten Associate teacher
Yésica Perea was born in the city of Celaya in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. There she studied tourism and received her degree in tourism administration which she later validated in the U.S. Yésica moved to Fremont, California with her husband about four years ago. In 2007 she began her studies in early childhood education at Chabot College. Currently, Yésica has an Associate Teacher permit and plans to receive her Master Teacher permit this year. Yésica considers herself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to begin a new profession in early childhood education and, even more so, to have the opportunity to work in her native language. Her pastimes include painting, cooking, singing and watching suspense movies. Yésica has worked with children for the last two years and feels very happy to belong to the EBI team.
Lissa Sorenson

Learning Specialist
Lissa Sorenson moved to the Bay Area approximately 9 years ago from her homeland, Hawaii.
After 2 years as a vocational nurse in Honolulu, she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Education and Arts from the University of Hawaii, and then later she completed a masters degree in special education from San Francisco State University. She has more than 9 years of experience working with students with different learning styles. Most recently, Lissa has been working as a consultant for the Alameda Unified School District with students with learning and/or emotional difficulties. This is Lissa’s first year at EBI - and she is thrilled to be able to bring all of her experiences in education, bilingualism and diversity to support the teachers, students and families at EBI. In her spare time - Lissa likes to travel, swim and read books.
Pilar Beccar-Varela

Literacy Specialist
Pilar was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and raised in Oakland, CA. In 1996 she graduated from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Studies and then returned home to the Bay Area to pursue a career in the classroom. From 1998 to 2004 she taught in the Hayward Unified School District, first as a first grade teacher, and then in kindergarten. During her time there, she became part of a cohort of teachers interested in literacy learning as well as project based, arts-rich curricula and how such curricula helps to develop oral language and cognitive growth. Her group received a two-year grant from the Spencer Foundation to conduct classroom research in these areas. Pilar received her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Cal State Hayward, followed by her National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification as an Early Childhood Specialist. After leaving the classroom to have her son, she taught in the UC Berkeley Developmental Teacher Education program, and then wrote literacy curriculum for the Developmental Studies Center in Oakland. It was her interest in teacher research, inquiry-based curriculum, and innovative approaches to language and literacy learning that first attracted Pilar to EBI. This is her second year teaching English literacy in the K-2 program. She is honored to be part of such a vibrant, supportive, and creative school community.
Luis Torres Torija

General Aide
Luis Torres Torija was born in Mexico City. He is an attorney with a specialty in insurance and securities. In his home city, Luis gave a number of training courses in insurance, securities and risk management in a variety of programs for insurance and securities companies. Luis’s work at EBI has been an incredible experience for him as he has gotten to know the EBI community and enjoyed being a part of it. Luis loves his work and the relationships he has with the children, teachers and parents.
Tatiana González

Pre-Kinder Floating Assistant Teacher and Aventura Teacher
Tatiana Yadira González was born and raised in San Francisco. Her parents are from El Salvador. Tatiana is studying Child and Adolescent Development at San Francisco State University. She has worked with children for seven years and loves to learn how the minds of children work. She is interested in discovering what they can achieve, no matter their age. She believes that she has great potential to help them develop their minds. Tatiana is very happy to be back in EBI and thinks this is a great opportunity to further develop her work with children.
Miriam Ruelas

Pre-Kinder Floating Assistant Teacher and Aventura Teacher
Miriam was born in the city of Torreón, México. After finishing her studies as an accountant and secretary she came to the US and decided to study Early Childhood Education at American College in San Francisco. She loves her job as a teacher and everything that relates to child development.
Patricia Sánchez

Pre-Kinder Floating Assistant Teacher and Aventura Teacher
Patricia Sánchez came to the Bay Area from Mexico City four years ago with the idea of expanding her education and skills in the field of education. Before coming to the United States she was a teacher in her country at the elementary and secondary levels. In recent years she has been interested in teaching in early childhood classrooms. She believes that learning should never end, so she enjoys keeping up with her studies. For her, being a teacher is about transmitting and encouraging her students to explore, discover, and experience new and wonderful things. She appreciates, admires and respects the sensitivity, feelings and ideas of children. She is proud to have the privilege of being part of the EBI team.
Roy Martínez

EBi Aventura Teacher
Roy Martínez, is a native of Mexico and has lived in San Francisco for four years. He is currently studying Education at San Francisco City College. He has worked as an assistant teacher for two years and also as a stage assistant. Last summer Roy became part of the EBI family when working at EBI summer camp. Now Roy is part of the EBI Aventura team, where he is having the opportunity to share his knowledge of theater, dance and education with the students. Roy lives in San Francisco and is excited by the growth he sees in the children and, of course, by being part of the amazing team at EBI.
Beatriz Alvarez
EBi Aventura Teacher
Beatriz Alvarez was born in Santa Barbara, California and is of Mexican descent. She received a bachelors degree in Political Science from the University of California Berkeley and hopes to pursue a degree in education policy in the future. She loves the multiculturalism that thrives in the bay area and is excited to be part of a globally conscious school like EBI.
She started working as a science camp instructor at the early age of 13 and fell in love with education and working with children. In Santa Barbara she became the supervisor of the local Museum of Natural History Teen Program, Quasars to Sea Stars. At the University of California Berkeley she worked as a Preschool Teacher assistant and later became the Enrichment Coordinator for the universities largest run mentoring organization. She is very interested in environmental science, natural history, cultural diversity and dance. During her free time she loves to Latin dance, be outdoors, try new foods, travel and explore the bay area.
Mariana Meyer
EBi Aventura Teacher
Mariana is a native of Argentina, born and raised in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires. In her teen years, she moved with her family to a small mountain village in the south of Argentina, a picturesque region known as ‘Patagonia’. Mariana began working with children after moving to the United States in the mid 2000’s, where she was a nanny for several wonderful families in the East Bay. She is now a student of Early Childhood Education and lives with her husband Eric, a native Bay Area resident
Gloria Costas

Administrative Assistant
Gloria Costas was born in Barcelona, Spain and has lived in the Bay Area since 1993. Gloria has a degree from the Tourism and Business college of Barcelona and a Certificate in Translation from the University of Manoa, Hawaii. She speaks fluent English, Spanish, French and Catalan, her native language, and understands Portuguese and German. Gloria brings enthusiasm and experience to EBI. She is married to Rob, a Berkeley native, and they have two sons.
Sandra Millán

Operations Coordinator
Sandra was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela where she earned her degree in Computer Science at Intituto Universitario de Tecnología Venezuela. She has over 5 years of experience teaching Spanish as a Second Language. She worked as a Spanish Instructor and Director Assistant in Houston, Texas where she lived for 5 years. Sandra also has over 8 years of expertise in networking technology. Sandra manages EBI’s Extended Day Care Program, ¡EBI Aventura! and the summer camp program. Sandra is married and the mother of one son.
Paloma Baquerizo

Development Coordinator
Born and raised in Madrid, Spain, Paloma Baquerizo holds a Law degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. After working as a Public Defender and an International Contracts Attorney, she moved to Berkeley. Here in the Bay Area she worked in Immigration Law for over 15 years. A firm believer in multilingual immersion programs, she and her husband are raising two trilingual sons. Paloma has seen the benefits of an international education both, in the academic and cultural aspects. She is proud to be involved in EBI’s pioneering program where she can bring her experience and enthusiasm.
Karen Smith Famous

Business Manager
Karen Smith Famous has a unique background which includes experience in non-profit management, human resource management, and education. Karen graduated from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley in 1992 with a B.S. in Business Administration and a minor in American Literature. Shortly after that she joined the Peace Corps where she served as a microenterprise development consultant with ADOPEM (Asociación Dominicana para el Desarrollo de la Mujer) in Santo Domingo. She then returned to Southern California, where she grew up, and worked in human resource management for three years with Price Waterhouse Coopers Management Consulting. Karen returned to the Bay Area in 1998 and served as Executive Director of Wardrobe for Opportunity, a local non-profit that provides free business attire to low-income job-seekers. She completed her multiple subject credential with BCLAD authorization in 2005 and worked as a fifth grade teacher for four years in Bay Point. In 2010, she completed her Master’s degree in Educational Leadership with her Preliminary Administrative Credential at CSU East Bay. She lives locally in Rockridge with her 2 ½ year old daughter, Katie, and husband, George.
Miguel Martínez
Music Teacher
Miguel was born in Chiapas, México, and holds degrees in Music Education and Transversal Flute from the University of Science and Art in Chiapas and La Universidad Veracruzana. He is trained in Kodaly and Orff. Miguel has taught children privately, as well as in schools and community programs in Mexico, Cuba and the United States. In addition, he has developed and directed musicals for young children. Miguel is the director of the local group Corazón Sur, playing beautiful fusions of jazz, Cuban and Mexican songs. He is also the co-director of Balamcoatl, a collaborative project with the goal of diffusing the rich music and dance traditions of the indigenous people of México.
Liza Sánchez
Admissions Director
Liza Sánchez was born and raised in Berkeley, California by her German mother and New York Jew father. Liza received her MA in Education from UC Berkeley, specializing in development and second language acquisition and has taught at many grade levels from preschool to high school and just about everything in between. Her love of teaching and language led her to start EBI. She served as EBI’s founding Board Chair from 2005 to 2008. She is happy to be in her new role as Director of Admissions doing her favorite thing; talking to prospective parents about EBI, bilingual education and international learning. She lives with her husband, who is from El Salvador, and her 4 daughters.
Maggie Salop
Facilities Coordinator / Project Manager
Maggie was born on a small island off the coast of Maine and was raised all over the United States in a military family. She has been working as an architect for the past fifteen years, as a project manager, designer, and more recently in the areas of marketing and public relations. Maggie’s architectural work focused on affordable family- and senior-housing, mixed-use urban development, and K-12 educational projects. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in Urban Studies, focusing in Architecture and Urban Design, and a Master of Architecture degree from University of Washington in Seattle. This is Maggie’s first year at EBI, and she is thrilled to guide the school in their growth. Maggie is a proud former EBI parent.
Anita Sagástegui
Art Teacher
Anita Sagástegui has long been an advocate of bilingual education, and is thrilled to be a part of EBI’s diverse and committed team. Anita grew up with both English and Spanish as her native languages, and is also fluent in French. Anita is a professional photographer, editor and literary translator, and has published several translations of works of fiction from both French and Spanish. For several years Anita taught poetry and literary translation in bilingual classrooms throughout the Bay Area. She has also taught formal art classes as well as jewelry-making and storytelling in various school settings. Besides photography Anita’s other artistic pursuits are painting in acrylic and creating watercolor pencil illustrations. Currently Anita is undertaking a master’s degree in Art Education. Anita is also the proud mother of two EBI students.
Allison Fernández
Enrichment Program Coordinator
Allison Fernández is a native Californian, raised amongst the vineyards and orchards of the Mendocino Valley. She graduated from UCSD with a BA in Studio Visual Arts and a double minor in Latin American Studies and World Music. She has lived abroad in Spain and Chile and enjoys learning about cultures through their unique art forms, music and dance.
Allison was the lead teacher and site director of a local Spanish language school and has created curricula for the full-immersion Spanish programs for children of all ages.
Most recently, Allison has developed her own programs to teach Spanish, both of which are offered through the EBI Enrichment Program:
Family Spanish is a side-by-side interactive Spanish class for children 6 months-4 years with an adult.
Useful Spanish for Parents is a conversation series for adults to learn phrases, songs and games in Spanish to help create a bilingual home.
In her new role as the Enrichment Program Coordinator, Allison plans to grow the after-school program to encourage everyone to participate, offering classes for all interests and ages, from children to adults.
Allison is married to a Chilean and the proud mother of two bilingual children.
