Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is a great way to bring various cultures into the classroom.

As part of our IB curriculum, we strive to develop Internationally minded students who understand and respect different perspectives and cultures. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is a great way to bring various cultures into the classroom so that we learn together as a diverse community.

Each year, the U.S. observes National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. This time gives us the opportunity to emphasize the importance of celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of the people living in the United States whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15, an important day in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. These countries celebrate the anniversaries of their independence. Mexico celebrates its independence day on September 16, Chile on September 18, and Belize on September 21.

Each year, the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM) as well as partners from different federal agencies, and affinity groups which include members of the public select a theme for the year. This year’s theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is: HISPANICS ARE THE DRIVERS OF AMERICA’S PROSPERITY, POWER, AND PROGRESS.

At EBI, we recognize the importance of the great impact that people of Hispanic descent have in our community, the Bay Area, and the world. With 15+ countries represented among EBI’s faculty and staff, recognizing these contributions to the U.S. highlights the importance of diverse voices.  We have organized different activities to celebrate and learn more about the contributions the people of Hispanic descent have made to the world, our community, and our school.

We have had a great time celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in our classrooms. Students have listened to music and stories from various Hispanic countries and visitors who came to speak about their traditions. Students also researched and shared the stories of individuals who have made valuable cultural and scientific contributions.

Escuela Bilingüe Internacional is an independent PreK-8 school offering a multilingual, international education that inspires our students to engage with a changing global world.

As one of the few bilingual immersion schools in the San Francisco Bay Area, we are proud to provide an exceptional inquiry-based learning and global education to our students.
