The health and safety of our school community is our top priority. We are actively monitoring the evolution of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and will use this page to provide school-related updates to our community.

Wednesday, April 1

Since we implemented our distance learning plan, we have been evaluating and adapting our approach to teaching and learning to best meet the needs of students and families. With each passing day, we get a better understanding of the best practices for distance learning. At the same time, we are thinking about the program’s long-term sustainability, support, and adaptability for our students, faculty, and families during a long arc of time at uncertain times. In alignment with our commitment to continuous improvement, we would like to learn more from each of you regarding your experience with distance learning to date. As such, we have sent customized surveys to understand better, by division, how we can best support your student(s). For parents with children in different grades, we ask that you kindly complete one survey per student. Students in grades 5-8 will also receive a survey through Division Heads so that we can hear directly from them.

As you have probably heard, Bay Area health officers have extended the stay-at-home order through May 3. At this time, we continue preparing for distance learning through May 1, while also anticipating the likelihood that distance learning may extend beyond this date, depending on the mandates set forth by public health and state officials. To this end, we will have a teacher planning day on Friday, April 10. This time will allow teachers and staff an opportunity to review our programs, incorporate feedback received from the surveys, and continue planning for a possible extended closure. No live sessions will be offered on this day. Spring break will still take place from April 13 - April 17. While the uncertainty continues, please know that all of our decisions are made to protect the health and safety of our students and community members.

A Message for our Students

We miss and love our students so very much! I am so proud of how hard they are working, growing and learning every day as they demonstrate every attribute of the IB Learner Profile. ¡Excelente trabajo! As promised in last week’s video, I have a special surprise for students, and I would love for you to please share it with them. In this first episode of The Wizarding World of Escuela Bilingüe Internacional (link is external), we have a very special guest speaker: Mr. Ollivander. Together, we explore the magic that lives inside every EBI community member, while also sharing about our favorite spells--hope the whole family enjoys it! I look forward to continuing to connect with students and sharing more episodes every week.

I want to voice the deep gratitude we all feel for the many members of the EBI community who are working as medical and health professionals, first responders, those who work with nonprofits and governmental agencies, and members who are leaving their homes each day to provide the vital services and goods that we’re all reliant on during these times. Heartfelt thanks for the work you and so many others are doing on behalf of us all. Please know that our thoughts and sincere gratitude are with you daily.

Wednesday, March 25

Today, we learned that Public Health Officers from Alameda County and the Alameda County Office of Education, in joint collaboration with school district leaders from five other Bay Area counties (link is external), plan to remain closed through May 1, 2020. After careful review and consideration, we have decided to follow the direction of our public health officials and public school districts, and we will also remain closed until at least May 1.

Wednesday, March 18

We would like to bring your attention once more to travel restrictions and to an important request from EBI. 

As noted on the CDC website, the “CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to the following destinations. Most foreign nationals who have been in one of these countries during the previous 14 days will not be allowed to enter the United States.


- China

- Iran

- Most European countries

- UK and Ireland

- South Korea”

Additionally, relative to travel domestically, the CDC “does not generally issue advisories or restrictions for travel within the United States. However, cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have been reported in many states, and some areas are experiencing community spread of the disease. Crowded travel settings, like airports, may increase chances of getting COVID-19, if there are other travelers with coronavirus infection.” 

We ask that you visit the CDC (link is external) to learn more about precautionary measures when traveling both internationally and domestically. If you, or a household family member, plan to travel, we ask that you complete the attached form (link is external) and return directly to our Head of School, Dr. Paola V. Monday, March 16

Driven by our love for our students and our deep commitment to providing them with the best possible learning experience, we have finalized our PK-8 Distance Learning Plan. 

Our pedagogical team has carefully drafted and designed a thoughtful plan with expectations based on individual grade levels. The aim is to ensure a continuous learning experience, while helping students to successfully establish a routine and predictability as they familiarize themselves with this new learning modality. If you have not received the EBI Distance Learning Plan, which will begin on Wednesday, March 18 and continue throughout the duration of our school closure, please contact Karen Hayes (link sends e-mail) who can help provide you access. Division Heads will send a separate communication on Tuesday morning with more details and informational videos.

Distance learning is a new process and program for us all. However, we will be flexible and agile as we execute this learning plan and will make any necessary adjustments to ensure that the needs of our students are continuously being met. We are here to support your children and you through every step of this process. 


Rest assured that the safety and well-being of our community will always be our top priority. There was an order of a shelter- in-place (link is external) for the Bay Area and our school will now be closed until April 7. During this time, we will be conducting professional multi-day, deep cleaning on both of our campuses to be ready to re-open when safely possible. It is important to know that we are considering multiple scenarios to minimize the impact that a more prolonged closure might have on student learning.

Friday, March 13

We announced on Thursday evening that we would be proactively suspending classes on Monday, March 16 to facilitate an extra professional development day for teachers and hoped to resume classes on Tuesday, March 17. Today, we are announcing that we will close our school on Tuesday, March 17 to add an extra professional development day for teachers, and will move to a distance learning model for students beginning on Wednesday, March 18. Our school will be closed from March 17 through April 5. Please note that we will continue assessing the situation and depending upon the circumstances, we may need to be closed for a longer period of time. Should this be the case, we will communicate with you as far in advance as possible so that you can best prepare.

Thursday, March 12

The well-being of our community remains a top priority for all of us in this evolving landscape. We are proactively suspending classes on Monday, March 16 to build an extra Professional Development Day for teachers. We want to assure you that there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our school community. With our Professional Development Day, we want to achieve the following objectives:

  • Our faculty and staff have been working really hard to prepare for a potential closure and are indeed ready. Additional time will allow us to bring teaching teams together to solidify their plans for extended distance learning activities should it be needed and to receive additional training
  • We will deep clean and disinfect our learning spaces
  • We will be prepared to be even more responsive to the growing number of student absences and families who are already opting to keep their student(s) home
  • We will use the time to continue to assess how the situation is unfolding into the weekend

Given the rapid rate of change and the new information becoming available, we will be using the next 24-48 hours to evaluate and consider an extended closure that would begin for both teachers and students on Tuesday, March 17. In order to prepare for this possibility, we ask that all students plan to bring all personal items home at the end of the school day tomorrow. We will send communication on our school closure plans as soon as we reach a decision.

Wednesday, March 11

Currently, Alameda County Public Health Department is not recommending closing schools. Any decision to close the school will be made to err on the side of caution to ensure the safety and health of our community members.

As of March 11, as a precautionary measure, all non-essential activities and programs are canceled for at least 14 days to support social distancing. Specifically, what is canceled is:

  • All field trips

  • All non-essential activities e.g. assemblies, concerts in the courtyard, nature walks around campus, etc.

  • All outside community events e.g. Spanish Storytime and 4H Program meetings

  • EBI Talent Show (will be rescheduled to a date TBD)

  • Gala & Auction (will be rescheduled to a date TBD)

We are committed to providing a continued learning experience for students and as such, have requested all families complete the remote learning survey. Please contact Sandra Millan, Technology Systems Director if you have not already completed.
